{"id":1045,"date":"2020-04-15T11:55:48","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T10:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reimaginingthelevels.org.uk\/?p=1045"},"modified":"2020-04-15T11:55:50","modified_gmt":"2020-04-15T10:55:50","slug":"looking-after-ourselves-during-the-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reimaginingthelevels.org.uk\/?p=1045","title":{"rendered":"Looking After Ourselves During the Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"349\" height=\"233\" data-src=\"https:\/\/reimaginingthelevels.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/person-watching-rain-across-the-levels.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1018 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/reimaginingthelevels.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/person-watching-rain-across-the-levels.jpg 349w, https:\/\/reimaginingthelevels.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/person-watching-rain-across-the-levels-300x200.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 349px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 349\/233;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The natural and necessary priority for all of us during this extraordinary and difficult time is to do what we can to stay safe and well, also to look out for those whose wellbeing concerns us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much has\nbeen said about how we can look after our mental and physical health under\nconditions of social distancing, restricted movement, even isolation.&nbsp; In\na way, it all comes down to connection:&nbsp; learning collective lessons about\nhow humankind\u2019s interactions with the natural world have helped to spawn this\nzoonotic virus, and about how our hyper-connected world has ensured its rapid\nspread, are vital longer-term challenges.&nbsp; In the meantime, modern\ntechnology gives us virtual connection with each other and our awareness of\nbeing&nbsp;<em>part of&nbsp;<\/em>Nature is more important than ever.&nbsp; The\ntime we spend outside may be officially restricted, but social distancing and\nthe banning of collective activities does not and must not shut us off from the\nEarth.&nbsp; The beauty and variety of life beyond our own species are wellsprings\nof wisdom, as well as being essential to our health and very survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the fear, anxiety and frustration that people are experiencing, this moment of \u201cStop\u201d is an opportunity (some would say a command!) to reflect on where we have got to, why we are where we are and what choices lie ahead.\u00a0 All of this as well as pure recreation, is enhanced when we immerse ourselves in the other-than-human world.\u00a0 Spring coaxes us out of ourselves, out of the artificial world, into another perspective on life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you go, you will no doubt feel a mixture of appreciation for all that\u2019s there and given, along with sadness and concern where there is depletion and damage.\u00a0 Many of us are noticing the ravages of Ash die-back, compounding the previous loss of our Elms.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Woodland Trust has a sombre assessment of the impact of Ash dieback will have on our landscapes and this might be an apposite time to record the Ash trees where you live.\u00a0 We know there are some huge beauties lining fields and droves known as Boundary Ash.\u00a0 Keeping a pictorial and written record of these as you complete your daily exercise will enable community memories of local landscape to be retained and replanting to be prioritised as necessary.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reimagining\nthe Levels continues to meet (virtually) and with an eye on the end of\n\u2018lock-down\u2019 is reserving trees and planning events for Autumn.&nbsp; Do contact us about places on the\nlevels or their catchment you\u2019ve seen where tree-planting, or other measures to\nhelp Nature re-generate, that would help us to conserve our landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The natural and necessary priority for all of us during this extraordinary and difficult time is to do what we can to stay safe and well, also to look out for those whose wellbeing concerns us.
