--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 259\/194;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 50 Parish Councillors from\nSedgemoor, Taunton and West Somerset districts attended the conference on 29<sup>th<\/sup>\nJanuary 2020 at West Monkton Village Hall.&nbsp;\nA packed programme of speakers and activities kept delegates engaged;\nBen Thorne from the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) on the role of\ntrees and hedges in flood mitigation, Alan Hall from the Taunton Country Park\nproject on the green corridor being planted to lessen the environmental damage done\nby the massive increase in housing in Taunton.&nbsp;\nOther contributions came from Plotgate Community Agriculture, Sedgemoor\nand Mendip Landscape Officers and Parish Councillors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Parish Tree Policy was\ndistributed and discussed \u2013 hopefully the take up for this will be positive.&nbsp; After a delicious lunch sourced from Somerset\nLocal Food Direct, delegates walked to a nearby planting scheme.&nbsp; Attention was drawn to a number of problems\nwith the planting, not least the number of trees that had died.&nbsp; Phil Stone led an informed discussion on why\nthis had occurred with learning taken on the importance of preparation,\nplanting and maintenance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back at the Village hall, the\ndifferent supports available for planting schemes were outlined, both financial\nand practical.&nbsp; Before leaving delegates\nwere asked to think about what \u2018actions\u2019 they would take from today\u2019s\nconference and we look forward to hearing how these have evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Future Visits and Training<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>RTL ran a\ntraining for community tree planting project leaders in November 2019 and will\nrepeat this training for the coming season of tree planting 2020-21<\/li><li>RTL ran an\norchard restoration training earlier in January 2020 and is running a fruit\ntree grafting workshop on April 23<sup>rd<\/sup> 2020<\/li><li>RTL is\nplanning a visit to Martin Crawford\u2019s Forest Garden Demonstration sites in\nDartington, Devon, this Spring<\/li><li>RTL is\ndiscussing possible training sessions on (a) mapping trees in your parish and\n(b) ash dieback \u2013 identification and actions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Details and opportunities to\nregister will be posted on the website nearer the time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over 50 Parish Councillors from Sedgemoor, Taunton and West Somerset districts attended the conference on 29th January 2020 at West Monkton Village Hall.&nbsp;
