Somerset County Council voted unanimously on 20 February to declare a Climate Emergency. The motion proposed by Tessa Munt garnered cross party support with only four abstentions. £25k has been allocated to draw up proposals on how the Council’s services and activities can improve their environmental impact.
Referring to the IPCC Report published in October 2018 which identified that we have 12 years to avert climate catastrophe, Ms Munt said that “we need to take individual action, but every level of government should take action to change legislation. We’ve got to make low-carbon living easier to achieve and the new norm. It’s a matter of commons sense, why wouldn’t we do this?”
A report will come back to the full council in November detailing the progress that has been made
